How to use FTP to upload files to WordPress for Beginners

In this lesson you’ll learn how to use FTP to upload files to WordPress.   FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a way to copy or move files between two computers on the Internet. Usually it’s your computer moving files to your hosting server where WordPress site is

Now for this tutorial I’m using FileZilla which is an open source and free FTP client.  You might be asking why in the world do you need to do something so complicated well the best cenario I can give you is if you broke something on your website and you can’t access the WordPress admin anymore you need a fast way to fix what you just broke and accessing your site via FTP is the way to go you may also need to change the folder permissions on your site for a plugin I’ll show you how to do that as well

So the first thing you want to do is open Filezilla and connect to your site via FTP credentials that you should have gotten from your hosting company as one of the first emails you got from them

On the left is my computer folders

and on the right are all of my folders from my wordpress site

On the right you can drill down to the folder. Where you need to copy files to in this case we’re looking for wp-content plugins.

All you have to do is drag the folder you need to upload from your left side to the right side.  You can also right-click on the folder and select upload now once its uploaded you can go to your plugin section of your website

and see that you now have the plugin that you want.  From filezilla so you can also delete the a folder or file.

this would be good if a plugin you just uploaded broke site or if you wrote bad code on your function site PHP file.

Hopefully you saved a copy of the original file in case something went wrong if something did go wrong you can just delete the bad file upload the original and then you’d your site be good to go. The next thing you want to do is look at your permission on your folder if one plugin needs special permission.

Can right click on any other folders or files to set the permissions as needed you. Can either write in the numeric value of the permissions you need here

or you can select or deselect different checkboxes. Once you’re finished click OK and it will apply those permissions to the file or folder as needed.

Now you should have your site back up and any new plugins or themes installed from your FTP.
